  monica marks grew up among fundamentalist jehovahs witnesses in eastern kentucky craving books and learning in a community where education wasnt valued.. today the university of louisville graduate is the state's latest rhodes scholar, the winner of one of the most coveted awards in academia.. growing up, the discussion wasnt about what college you would go to, it was whether or not you were even going to college, she said.

  the idea of going to university and getting a degree, much less getting a rhodes, didnt even fall within our purview.. at 23 years of age, her studies in islamic law have already taken her around the globe to places like jordan, tanzania and tunisia.

  Good for her. Unlike Freddie, she actually is a Rhodes scholar. Education is the path out of a cult. Maybe her parents will join her.

  Really, just reading this brings back that uncomfortable feeling of never being free to just relax.

  what are the standard jw objections to thanksgiving?

  do they claim there is any kind of a scriptural basis for condemning it?

  i plan on asking someone about this and i'm curious what types of reasoning they might try to throw at me.

  Welcome to the hew posters. I once asked a witness lady what was wrong with Thanksgiving. She said, "Nothing, really, but since we don't celebrate anything else, I didn't want to confuse my kids. So I threw it out too."

  A lot of jws celebrate Thanksgiving. We always had a meeting on Thursday, and you could tell which ones had been out celebrating with "worldly" family. I have even heard a speaker tell everyone to stay awake and not let that turkey put you to sleep.

  With only one meeting a week now, they probably have all day and evening to celebrate.

  Nobody really can be sure until they experience death, but I am interested in near death experiences too, especially the ones from children. There have been cases where children have "met" dead loved ones they never knew existed and shocked their parents when they talked about their conversations.

  Tonight I was looking at the stars and wondering how many millions/billions of years old the light was that I was seeing. How can I see something now that happened so long ago? We are so bound up in our experience in "time" that it is difficult to see the possibilities that lie beyond.

  Reincarnation and the development of the soul is something I think about too. We get such a little peek at life here on earth that it seems impossible for it to be the end all of life.

  The 'other sheep' - Isn't it so obvious that Jesus is talking about gentiles?

  am i being silly or do some other religions have a different understanding of who the 'other sheep' are?.

  when i was a jw, i could see so clearly that this group is the gentiles.

  that is, of course, reading the text 'in context', rather than simply placing it in a flakey jw leaflet.. why can jehovahs witnesses not see that they are so wrong on this point?.

  Wasn't this idea of two classes dreamed up by Rutherford when it was getting obvious that there were too many jws to be just 144,000? They had to morph to keep their numbers growing and make sense too. It was "noo lite" and they all marveled at it.

  Yes, it is very obvious that it Jesus was referring to the Gentiles. I even thought that while I was a jw, but quickly and obediently stuffed it away from conscious thought, most of the time.

  CLINDAMYCIN

  ok, so i had a toothache a few weeks back and found out i had an infection, which my dentist prescribed me clindamycin.

  ohhhh my gawwwwd.... it is the suckiest thing on the planet.

  while i took 4 doses each day for 7 days to get rid of the bad bacteria, i noticed no problems & the toothache went away.

  Clindamycin is a pretty harsh antibiotic for some people. It has been known to cause C-Diff, which is some serious intestinal problems. Probiotics are really important when you take any antibiotic, but especially this one.

  Even doctors are coming around and suggesting probiotics for their patients. Well, some of them are. Antibiotics aren't choosy, they kill off the good bugs along with the bad.

  It is kinda creepy knowing you are the host for a lot of different organisms.

  Lovelylill2, thanks for the list of titles for God. I used to talk to the Mormons when they came around and they always stressed how many different names there are in the OT for God.

  How would you get around the idea that one is a personal name and the others are titles or descriptions of God? I don't call God Jehovah anymore, but that is what a jw would say about the other names.
